Fashionable Beginnings

During my years at Elphinstone College, Mumbai, I stumbled into modelling when a friend suggested I do a photo shoot. My passion for fashion, however, has been with me since childhood. I vividly remember being more focused on my tuition teacher’s outfits than on my studies! My mom noticed this and encouraged me. This led to my first job at a store, where I began sketching designs.

Foray Into Films

It all started in 1990, when I had the opportunity to work on David Dhawan’s Swarg, starring Juhi Chawla. That same year, I designed a look for the late Srideviji for a photo shoot. While I did several projects and shoots following that, it was Rangeela in 1995 that truly catapulted my work into the limelight. Working closely with Ramuji (Ram Gopal Varma), who was kind enough to narrate the script to me, an exercise not common at the time for costume designers, allowed me to deeply understand Urmila Matondkar’s character. I envisioned costumes that were youthful, dreamy, and stylish— reflecting her character’s aspirations and the film’s vibrant spirit. I received my first Filmfare Award for this blockbuster.

Milestone Man

In addition to making costumes for movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dil To Pagal Hai, Jab We Met, and many more, another landmark moment for me was the launch of my own label in 2005. This was a truly transformative step. It enabled me to establish a unique identity and explore new creative horizons in fashion—from couture to bridal wear. Now, I look forward to doing more in the space of high jewellery.

Nuptials of the Season

As the Creative Director of Anant and Radhika Ambani’s wedding, I collaborated with a group of very talented people to create spectacular looks for the family and the venues. This included Sumant Jayakrishnan’s thematic designs, Jeff Leatham’s floral artistry, and Devika Narain’s décor expertise.

The grandeur of the structures and intricate details were crafted to ensure a perfect fusion of form and function. Florals by Heena Patel, Preston Bailey, and Interflora added a touch of elegance. For international guests like Kim and Khloé Kardashian, we created ensembles that reflected their personal styles with the richness of Indian fashion, using clean lines, modern cuts, and subtle sophistication.

Global Galas

I’ve worked a fair amount on international, large-scale events and with renowned celebrities. Recently, for Jennifer Lopez’s birthday, we custom-designed a Bridgerton-inspired corset skirt and chose her favourite colour—olive green—for it. The gown was brought to life by 40 artisans over 3,490 hours! The outfit was created with vintage brocade and featured an exquisite floral motif, moulded entirely by hand using sequins and over half-a-million crystals. Similarly, it was an honour to design the ivory chikankari (Lucknowi embroidery) lehenga for Jennifer Aniston in Murder Mystery 2, as well as Rihanna’s outfit for her new Fenty Hair brand launch.

On Trend!

For this wedding season, we’re embracing Indian heritage with a modern twist. Expect luxurious Benarasi brocades, vibrant bandhanis (tie-dye), and opulent South Indian pattu fabrics for both men and women. Our latest collection, ‘Evara’, features intricate zardozi and zari craftsmanship, crystal and pearl- encrusted details, and a rich palette of traditional colours this festive season!

A Few of My Favourite Things

Contrary to my creations, my own aesthetic is quite understated. While I revel in working with vibrant colours in my designs, personally, I gravitate towards solid hues like black and navy. In fact, I love Rekhaji’s style. It’s iconic and her signature Kanjeevaram sarees, flawless make-up, and striking red lips, are the epitome of timeless glamour. I am very drawn to that form of elegance.

Beyond the Studio

I love travelling to unwind and recharge! London and Dubai hold a special place in my heart. I also find solace in the quiet moments of early mornings, enjoying a cup of tea while listening to calming, spiritual chants. It’s a time for reflection and peace. And of course, I have a deep love for sketching and exploring new design ideas: it’s both a passion and a way to relax.

Host with the Most

I love spending time with my friends and family, especially during Diwali. Since I adore flowers, I make sure my house is filled with fresh posies and candles; it creates such a warm ambience. And being a Punjabi and foodie myself, it’s in my nature to serve and make my guests feel welcome and spoilt. Hence, the food menu is simple, but delicious… always.
